What is novel coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Novel coronavirus is a virus strain that has only spread in people since December 2019. Health experts are concerned because little is known about this new virus and, since it is new, no one has immunity to it.

The virus has the potential to cause severe illness and pneumonia in some people, including adults age 60 and older, pregnant people, people who have severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung, or kidney disease, and people with a weakened immune system.

The disease that this novel coronavirus can cause is called COVID-19.

How severe is COVID-19?

Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and will not need medical care.

Some people are at risk of severe illness. People at higher risk of severe illness include:
-Adults age 60 and older.
-Pregnant people.
-People who have severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung, or kidney disease.
-People with a weakened immune system.
