IMMUNONUTRITION #10: EAT MORE PLANTS – Plant foods including Colorful Fruits and Vegetables help to establish and maintain a healthy Microbiome and Immune System. The original diet of Ancient Humans and Pre-Human Primates was based on Plants and from studies of native people in Australia, we know they ate over 800 different plant species including their seeds, stems, roots, flowers and leaves. Today about 150 plant species are eaten around the world and in many developed countries over 80% of people eat fewer than 5 servings per day. On average, Americans eat only 2 to 3 servings a day. Snack foods rich in sugar, fat, and salt have taken over the modern diet. While these diets have enough vitamins and minerals to avoid deficiency diseases like scurvy and rickets from almost no vitamin C or vitamin D, there is too little of all the things we need from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains including fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals to maintain our Microbiome and Immune function. Color is a great way to get 7 diverse fruits and vegetables (see slide). Eat the plant Rainbow as described in my book “What Color is Your Diet?” available in 11 languages.
