The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently gave emergency use authorization (EUA) to convalescent blood plasma therapy for hospitalized coronavirus patients. In the past, there has been research conducted that shows the effectiveness of convalescent plasma therapy for other diseases, including pandemics like SARS and MERS. Plasma is collected from previously infected individuals to passively transfer antibodies in order to treat COVID-19 patients, believed to boost the immunity of the virus. Many individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 have taken it upon themselves to donate plasma. One of the many issues here is that scientists have not done enough testing and research on convalescent plasma. President Donald Trump recently announced that convalescent plasma reduced mortality by 35% and blood plasma is will end the coronavirus pandemic. This could not be further from the truth. Without rigorous, controlled testing, doctors are left to make educated guesses about how exactly to use this medical treatment.
