Pamela Bjorkman, the David Baltimore Professor of Biology and Bioengineering, speaks with Caltech science writer Lori Dajose (BS ’15)about how vaccines work and the latest news on COVID-19 vaccines.

Bjorkman, a longtime leader in the study of how the human immune system detects and defends against harmful viruses, is Caltech’s David Baltimore Professor of Biology and Bioengineering. Her research group turned its focus to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in the earliest days of the pandemic. The group produced the first images of antibodies latching onto a part of the virus and designed vaccine technology that could protect against many strains of coronaviruses.

Watch this webinar to hear the science behind COVID-19 vaccine development, including the U.S. FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccines produced by Pfizer-BioNTechand Moderna, the biology of vaccines and immunity, and more, as Bjorkman answers questions from the Caltech community.
