CORONAVIRUS PANIC AND BOOSTING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM.
Hello and Welcome to another Coronavirus video.
I cannot stop being uneasy about COVID-19 simple because we are told it’s a deadly virus.
Our government doesn’t seem to be prepared for this virus even though they keep saying there are stringent measures in place. The government keep telling us not to panic without giving us detailed information COVID-19.
In fact most countries supply very vague information to the citizens with exception of Singapore.
Singapore keeps its citizen updated with detailed and specific information about all the COVID-19 cases.
Well at least that keeps the anxiety at reasonable levels.
Here in South Africa every time the Minister of Health address us, it actual gives me more doubts.
If you look at how developed countries find it difficult to deal with the virus you just can’t help it but wonder how it’s going to look like in our country.
Our government confirmed that they were aware that people coming back from Italy were at high risk of contracting the virus but government failed to control the movement of those people or to take any measures to contain the virus.
Even after those people were diagnosed with the virus, the government allowed them to self-quarantine, I don’t even understand the meaning of that phrase.
People are anxious worldwide, we have seen people fighting for toilet paper in Australia, and in other many countries there’s a shortage of hygiene products.
I think it’s a natural thing to fear the unknown. It’s just hope that the warm weather will help to contain the virus.
But all of the above is not necessarily within our control.
One of the things that we know for sure is that a strong immune system can help to avoid infections and fight diseases.
Here are some of the cost effective ways to boost your immune system.
1. Make sure you get enough sleep.
Sleep at least 6 to 7 hours per night
Have a regular bedtime and wake up schedule.
2. Have a moderate exercise
Moderate meaning reasonable time for your body to recover as soon as possible, avoid overdoing it because that may expose you to high risk, whereby your body takes up to 72 hours to repair.
Which means during that 72 hours period you immune system will be weaker exposing you to unnecessary risk, the very same thing you are trying to avoid.
3. Minimise stress in your life.
One of the study that was conducted by Ohio State University shows that the immune system perform better if we are not under stress.
4. Avoid consuming alcohol in excess.
I don’t think I have to go into details with this one, use your imagination.
Let’s now look into some of inexpensive food that can boost the immune system:
Vitamin C
Shortage in vitamin C results in impaired immunity.
Drink lemon water before breakfast, I have seen most women doing this.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D can help in boosting the immune system. Sources of Vitamin D are: milk, orange juicy, cheese, beef liver, eggs. You can also get vitamin D from the sun but be careful not risk getting skin cancer. I suggest you research this one more if you want to use sunlight as a source of vitamin D.
Vitamin A
Also known as VitA , it’s an anti-inflammatory vitamin and it has an important role in enhancing the immune function.
Sources of Vitamin A are dark leafy vegetables such as spinach and broccoli.
Beef and lamb liver, hardboiled egg.
Selenium
Selenium reduces inflammation and enhances immunity. It’s an essential mineral which must be obtained through diet.
Sources of selenium are: eggs, chicken breast, Brazilian nuts.
Zinc
A study done in 2013 by Ohio State University showed that zinc helps control infections.
Sources of zinc: Baked beans, eggs, red meat, poultry, dairy products, whole grains, dark chocolate
Garlic
Garlic doesn’t cure COVID-19 however its helps in boosting the immune system and many other benefits, basically it’s used as both ingredient and medicine. Too much intake make cause bad breath.
Other foods that are worth mentioning are:
Ginger, which is usually sold as a mixture with garlic.
Turmeric
Green tea
The above list is not exhausted, and I chose food that is inexpensive.
If you have a medical aid, I would highly recommend to do a small research on their website or visit reliable sources of information such as World Health Organization and Centres of Disease Control and Prevention.
Thank you for watch this video.
