In recent weeks, images of overcrowded hospitals in China have flooded social media, sparking fears of a new pandemic. However, the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is not new to India, the Health Ministry clarified on Monday (January 6, 2025).
The Ministry stated that HMPV is already in global circulation, including in India, and none of the reported cases in the country have a travel history. All infected individuals are recovering well.
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda reassured in a video statement, “HMPV is not a new virus. It was first identified in 2001 and has been circulating worldwide for years. The virus spreads through the air and can affect people of all age groups. Our health systems and surveillance networks remain vigilant—there’s no reason to panic.”
