[Music] overdosing on supplements yes it is possible to overdose on vitamins and supplements i have seen this as a family doctor it is very real a lot of people don’t realize you can actually take too much of your supplements but yes you can guys too much vitamin c for example can actually cause kidney stones uh vitamin d overdoses can actually cause stomach upset oh and by the way there’s plenty of other side effects that can be caused by taking too much of your supplement or vitamin or overdosing on them just understand that you can now look in terms of megadoses of supplements um if you’re under a doctor’s care they are prescribing the megadose of the supplement if you’re in a clinical trial again under medical care doctors care that’s not what i’m talking about i’m talking about you doing this in your own home kind of coming up with what you think you need to be taking um be careful one of the biggest mistakes i see people making is taking too much of their supplement now the second thing second mistake i see people making has to do with the doctor and that is not telling their doctor that they’re taking supplements at all i have had this time and time again where a patient will have a symptom we can’t figure out what’s going on going through everything everything everything and i’m asking every question in the book and i come back to the meds hey let’s review your meds one more time are you taking anything else oh well there are my vitamins come to find out that the patient is taking all these vitamins and supplements and guys the reason why we need to know about them is that number one they can interfere with your medications that you’re taking number two they can have side effects and cause symptoms um it’s really important that your doctor know about it do not assume that um no you don’t need to tell your doctor that is not the case third mistake is assuming that supplements and vitamins are all safe and good and healthy well not necessarily uh and remember that a lot of the i mentioned this in the beginning you can overdose on supplements some supplements or vitamins may not be right or healthy for you do not assume that just because it’s a vitamin or a supplement and it seems natural that it must be healthy and safe that is not necessarily the case unfortunately uh number four um number four mistake is taking supplements as a replacement for nutrition as a replacement for foods that you eat guys um you know if you’re able to get your nutrition through food which most of us are i want you to get it through food now some of us need supplements and vitamins but your doctor should be telling you if that’s you uh but don’t use vitamins and supplements as a replacement for a healthy balanced diet um that is not the case and don’t over rely on supplements i see a lot of people you know sort of almost over relying on supplements whether physically or psychologically assuming that because they’re taking supplements they may not need to use safety measures washing their hands and all that kind of stuff or that their diet may be a little bit more or could be a little bit more lacks not the case do not over rely on supplements mistake number five that i see is people not reading expiration dates that’s right these expire just like so many other things in life make sure you are checking expiration dates that you are not taking vitamins and supplements that are expired that’s super super important um once again guys really really important make sure you are talking to your doctors about supplements and vitamins that you’re taking you might find that you don’t need to take as many or as much as you think or thought you needed to also keep in mind many of these supplements are very expensive okay uh talk to your doctor about what you really need and what you don’t i’m dr jen cottle practicing family physician on air health expert and video creator uh please subscribe to my channel and click the little bell for updates guys i love you bye
