12 Benefits of methylcobalamin b12 supplements.
Methylcobalamin is a form of Vitamin B12 which is methylated and ready to use. Unlike cyanocobalamin, this form is easier for the body to use as it’s already activated.
In this video we explore the 12 fascinating benefits of taking methylcobalamin for raising energy, skin health, heart beat regulation, nerve support and much more. We also discuss the other forms of B12, and why some people don’t absorb it very well because of common genetic mutations (MTHFR and others).
Since B12 is made in by microbes in ruminant animals, it cannot be obtained from plants. This is why many people on a plant based diet find their selves deficient. However methylcobalamin can help to bridge the gap, along with adequate iron intake.
However, always try to get your nutrients from food where possible. Vitamin B12 is highest in liver & organ meats, beef & lamb, clams, shellfish, sardines, eggs and oily fish. Your body also needs B9 and B6 which work with B12, which you can obtain from leafy greens.

12 things that happen to your body when you take methylcobalamin B12. This video is for educational purposes only and was made by a real person. Always speak to your doctor if you have any medical concerns. Benefit number one is improved energy levels. Methylcobalamin is actually one of the best remedies to help raise energy levels, especially if you find even light tasks exhausting, like carrying groceries or walking up the stairs. For example, if you notice that you always feel tired, it could be caused by a B12 deficiency or anemia. Taking 1 to 3,000 micrograms of methylcobalamin per day usually helps to raise energy within a week or two. Benefit number two is improved skin tone. Vitamin B12 helps your bone marrow make red blood cells which then carry the red colored hemoglobin. Without enough of this, your skin, your lips, and your inner eyelids can become very pale and dull colored. But methylcobalamin helps to bring more oxygenrich blood near the surface for a healthier skin tone and complexion. A side note here, you also do need to have iron to make hemoglobin, which comes from red meat and fish. Benefit number three, regulating your heartbeat. If your heart rate is above 100 beats per minute whilst you’re resting, be aware that it could be caused by anemia where you don’t have enough healthy red blood cells. But by helping your body to build healthier red blood cells, B12 supplements can help oxygen to travel through your body in order to take the strain off your heart so it doesn’t need to beat as fast. Four, warming up the body. People low in B12, particularly vegans, vegetarians, or elderly people, often have freezing cold feet and hands, which feels like they’re chilled right down to the bone, even when they’re sitting in a warm room. Methylcobalamin can help your body to make more heat by increasing the flow of oxygen in the red blood cells. It’s also used by your cells mitochondrial energy factories to generate more energy as well. Now benefit number five is improving mental clarity. People who find that they can’t mentally focus. They feel emotionally flat or have a lot of brain fog have often found that using methylcobalamin supplements helps their situation. You see B12 helps your body to synthesize serotonin, dopamine, and other important brain chemicals that you need to stay feeling good and thinking clearly. Six, strengthening nails. Did you know that 40 to 60% of people can’t absorb B12 very well because of a common genetic mutation? And this can cause the vertical lines in your nails to start turning into deeper vertical ridges. Taking higher doses of methylcobalamin up to 3,000 micrograms daily can help you to absorb more of it, which then helps the nail cells to grow out properly without splitting apart. Moving on to benefit seven, repairing nerves. Vitamin B12 is absolutely essential for building and protecting the coating around your nerves. Without enough of it, your nerves can start to shortcircuit, sending tingling, buzzing, or electrical sensations to your brain. Low B12 can also cause people to feel offbalance, especially when their eyes are closed. But taking regular methylcobalamin supplements can help with this. But do make sure that you avoid the cheap cyanocobalamin supplements which are very poor quality. So always check the labels. Which leads me on to number eight. Healing tongue tissue. If the little bumps on your tongue are starting to disappear and it’s becoming very smooth or shiny or perhaps it’s swollen and inflamed, these could be signs of anemia or low B12. These are very common issues in vegans and vegetarians. Methylcobalamin supplements can help the tongue to start regenerating and return to its normal texture. Nine, ulcers. Frequent bouts of mouth ulcers, also known as cankeraurs, are also linked with having low B12. So, methylcobalamin supplements or even the hydroxycobalamin injections usually clears up this issue. It’s also important that I mention people who have stomach ulcers also tend to need more B12 to help heal the damaged tissues. In my next video, I’ll be talking more about the deeper causes of B12 deficiencies. So, watch out for that one. Now, moving on to benefit number 10, improving the vision. B12 supplements, especially methylcobalamin and a form called adenosylcobalamin, can help to shield your optic nerve against oxidative damage and also supply oxygen to it. This helps to prevent pale patches, blurry vision, and dimness in the field of vision as you age. 11. Improving sleep by helping to regulate your circadian rhythm. Methylcobalamin can also help you to get a good night’s sleep. However, do not make the mistake of taking this late at night as it will actually give you more energy and keep you wired. The best thing to do is to take methylcobalamin sublingually under your tongue first thing in the morning. If you’re having trouble sleeping, you may also want to watch my video, the top six vitamins to help you sleep. And we also have reduced ear ringing. A high-pitched ringing or a buzzing in your ears can be caused by slow signals coming through your auditory nerve. Many people have found that methylcobalamin can help with this along with torine and a form of B1 called benotium. And finally, let’s quickly look at a few more benefits of methylcobalamin that I wanted to mention, but I won’t go into too much detail here. Firstly, B12 helps with methylation in your liver to remove toxic chemicals and heavy metals from your blood. It helps to copy and repair DNA in tissues like your gut, skin, and immune cells. Methylcobalamin has also been linked to stronger bones and less fractures. B12 can support healthy sperm production, movement, and fertility in men. It helps the body make something called SAM E, a compound that supports emotional balance. And by boosting red blood cells, B12 helps deliver nutrients to your scalp for stronger hair growth over time. Vitamin B12’s daily requirements. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin which you should be getting in your diet on a daily basis, most preferably from your food. As you can see on this chart, the daily requirements are a minimum of 2.4 micrograms for adults per day. However, over 40% of people have a genetic mutation in the MTHFR gene, and this causes problems with methylation. Essentially, this means that you may need even more B12 from foods just to absorb it, between 10 to 30 micrograms. The active form of vitamin B12 that humans need is actually made by bacteria inside animals. This is why it’s almost impossible to get it from plants. So, make sure that you’re eating this from animal-based foods like organ meats, beef and lamb, clams, shellfish, and muscles, sardines, eggs, and oily fish. For your information, vegans can also get algaebased B12 from chlorella vulgaris, but unfortunately it’s not as absorbable. So supplements may still be needed on this diet. If you’re a person who wants to take a supplement to boost your vitamin B12 levels, make sure that you do avoid that poorly absorbed cheap variety called cyanocobalamin which is made chemically from cyanide. This type has to be converted in your liver before it can be used. The type of B12 that we’re talking about in this video is already methylated. So, it gets directly absorbed to use in your cells. The standard dosage of methylcobalamin is between 1,000 and 3,000 micrograms per day, ideally on an empty stomach in the morning. You can get this in the form of a tablet or a capsule supplement, but the very best type is actually liquid and you can place this under your tongue sublingually. The sublingual form can go directly into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes in your mouth, making it excellent for people who have digestive problems such as low stomach acid, reflux, Crohn’s, IBD, etc. Now, let’s talk about the side effects. Methylcobalamin is water soluble. So if you take too much, your kidneys usually just flush the excess through your urine. So generally speaking, the side effects are minimum. However, if you mega dose and you’re taking above 5,000 micrograms per day for a very, very long time, some people do notice a flare up of acne or rosacea, or they may feel wired, anxious, or restless. So, it’s best to stick with 1 to 3,000 micrograms or the recommended dose on the bottle. So, let’s have a look at the other types of B12 for your information. Hydroxycobalamin is commonly used in vitamin B12 injections which is administered every 1 to 3 months in people who have long-term deficiencies. This type of B12 stays longer in the body. However, methylcobalamin is more active and ready to use. And then there’s adenosil cobalamin which is another natural form used directly by your mitochondria to generate energy in the cells. And then cyanocobalamin is that cheap nasty synthetic version which is poorly converted and not very well absorbed. There’s also something called B12 analoges and these are found in spirulina nori and some fermented foods. They look like B12, but they don’t work in your body and they can actually block you from absorbing it. Co-actors. Remember that vitamin B12 is a nutrient, not a medicine. It works as a team with other nutrients like B6, B9, and iron to build red blood cells and promote a healthy body. You can actually get all four of these nutrients by eating organ meats like liver. And you can also get some of them by consuming avocados, sunflower seeds, broccoli, pistachios, and leafy greens. So, what are the best testing protocols for vitamin B12? The standard serum blood tests for B12 can give you the wrong results because they only measure the amount of B12 in your blood. They don’t actually measure how much B12 is actively being used by your cells. This is why so many people get told that their B12 levels are normal even when they feel absolutely awful. I recommend asking your doctor for an active B12 test which is far more accurate. Alternatively, you could ask for an MMA test. And if this number is high, it means that your cells are not using enough B12. And also, high homocyine levels in the blood can also indicate low B12, low folate, or low B6. The simplest thing to do is to notice the signs and symptoms that your body presents and then learn more about what’s causing the deficiency.
