The Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus has appointed Katy Tombaugh of Westerville as its new fitness director, effective Sept. 15. Tombaugh brings nearly two decades of experience in wellness, fitness, and community health to her new role.
“I’m thrilled to be part of such a dynamic and inclusive organization,” Tombaugh told the Columbus Jewish News. “Being surrounded by a team that’s dedicated to offering so many powerful programs and services – both within the JCC and throughout the broader community – is truly inspiring. I love the diversity here and the emphasis on whole-person well-being; physical, emotional, spiritual and social.”
Originally from Sylvania, Tombaugh moved to Columbus in 1999 to attend The Ohio State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in human ecology. Her lifelong passion for movement and connection began early through professional dance training and evolved into a career centered on fitness and wellness education, she said.
“I always knew I wanted a career that allowed me to be active and work with people in meaningful ways,” Tombaugh said. “I’ve taught in athletic clubs, community centers and with BalletMet’s Education and Community Outreach programs.”
Tombaugh holds certifications in group exercise, personal training, yoga, Pilates and health coaching. Her experience spans all ages and fitness levels, from preschoolers to professional athletes and corporate leaders. By her mid-twenties, Tombaugh launched her first fitness business, later founding Wellness Collective, a company devoted to transforming workplaces through health and happiness initiatives. For the past 18 years, she has led the organization and consulted with employers nationwide on employee well-being, she said.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Tombaugh has been an active volunteer, serving on committees and boards focused on health, education, inclusion and food insecurity.
“A few years ago, I set an intention to take on a leadership role with a nonprofit mission,” she said. “I didn’t know where that path would lead, but I knew it was an important next step in aligning my career with my purpose.”
To welcome Tombaugh and to launch a discount membership offer, the Columbus JCC will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 23, featuring exclusive offers on personal training, Pilates Reformer sessions, and Deluxe Health Center services. Guests can enjoy demos, food tastings and more. Visitors will receive 20% off JCC memberships and Deluxe Health Center packages, along with waived registration fees. Current JCC members who bring a friend who joins during the event will receive one free month of membership.
The Columbus JCC is at 1125 College Ave. in Columbus.
