If your credit card still hasn’t recovered from Christmas and New Year’s, you’re not alone. A lot of New Yorkers are feeling that post holiday pinch right now. That’s probably why more people are open to buying beauty “dupes” instead of pricey name brand products.
A new study found that over 50% of shoppers say they’re willing to try dupes. That number could keep climbing as people look for smart ways to save money without giving up their routines.
What Exactly Is a Dupe?
A dupe is a cheaper product that works like a high end one. Same kind of texture with similar results but without the luxury price tag. Thanks to TikTok and beauty blogs, dupes are easier to find than ever. And for New Yorkers juggling rent, groceries, gas, and everything else, saving money on makeup and skincare can really add up.
Luxury Beauty Prices Add Up Fast
The study from Fresha looked at nearly 100 popular beauty brands and found something eye opening. Premium beauty products cost about 347 percent more than their dupe alternatives. That means you could be paying three or four times more just for the brand name.
The Biggest Money Saver Is Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream
If you’ve ever stood in Sephora staring at Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream, this one might hit home. The moisturizer costs about $107 for a small jar. Dupes like Revolution Miracle Cream, Embryolisse Lait Crème Concentré, and Bondi Sands Whipped Moisturiser average around $19. That’s a savings of about $88.
Foundation Dupes Are Easier Than You Think
High end foundations are another place where savings really show up. NARS Light Reflecting Foundation costs about $59. Dupes from brands like Maybelline, L’Oréal, and Revolution average around $17. That’s a $42 difference for something you probably use every day. Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Foundation also has dupes that can save shoppers around $36.
These Are the Brands People Want Dupes For Most
Some brands come up again and again when people search for dupes. Sol de Janeiro tops the list, with nearly 70,000 searches a year for cheaper alternatives. Charlotte Tilbury comes in second, followed by Drunk Elephant, Chanel, and Dior. Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream is the single most searched for dupe product, with tens of thousands of people looking for a less expensive option.
Dupes Aren’t Perfect, But They Can Be Worth It
It’s important to remember that a dupe isn’t always an exact match. Ingredients can be different, and what works for one person’s skin might not work for another’s. Many dupes get just as much love in reviews as the originals. Doing a little research before buying can help make sure a product is right for you.
