Crunch Fitness recently expanded in New Jersey with the acquisition of five gym locations, the company has announced.

Fitness Holdings North America, which operates Crunch Fitness franchises, acquired facilities in Tinton Falls, Ocean Township, Wall Township, Freehold and Marlboro from Jersey Strong Gym, according to a statement issued on Friday.

The company plans to invest more than $20 million in renovations and equipment upgrades at the locations.

There are 29 Crunch Fitness centers located in the state.

Mark Federico, chief executive officer of Fitness Holdings North America, said in a statement that the company is “transforming these locations into vibrant, welcoming, and engaging spaces.”

The renovated facilities will feature cardio equipment, Olympic lifting platforms, dumbbells up to 120 pounds, hydromassage beds and HIITZone training areas. The gyms will also offer classes including dance, yoga and Pilates.

A new Crunch Fitness center is also the newest tenant at Regent Shopping Center in Aberdeen.

Crunch Fitness, which opened in early January, is located at 1121 Route 34 near Lloyd Road.

Crunch Fitness began in 1989 in New York City’s Greenwich Village, and Fitness Holdings North America now operates nearly 50 Crunch locations.
