As the calendar turns over, many of us pledge to make health and fitness a priority. By February, however, resolutions often fade. According to local expert Alistair Hopper, of Flex Fitness, the most common mistake people make is setting goals that are unrealistic for the time-frame they expect. Real change takes time.

“We always encourage people to use the SMART method — goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and tied to a clear time0frame,” Hopper said.

A second pitfall is lack of accountability.

“Whether it’s a workout partner, a trainer, or even a supportive friend, having someone who checks in on your progress builds motivation and consistency,” Hopper added.

Sticking with fitness goals can feel challenging when results are slow. Hopper and Flex Fitness recommend using multiple forms of accountability.

“Hire a trainer for structure, use technology for reminders, and ‘habit-stack’ new routines onto existing ones — such as doing 20 push-ups immediately after brushing your teeth,” Hopper said, explaining that small, purposeful habits help progress feel achievable.

Diet is, of course, related to fitness and it is anarea where minor changes have a big impact.

“Start your day with a glass of water, and keep convenient, healthy foods like pre-cut vegetables, fruit, and leftovers ready to grab,” Hopper said. “Intuitive eating — honouring hunger and fullness cues without overeating or restricting — is an effective long-term strategy.”

With more than 15 years in the community, Flex Fitness has supported people of all ages, with all kinds of goals.

“After more than 25 years in the fitness industry, I’m still inspired by the journeys and success stories of clients,” Hopper said. “Helping people build healthier, happier lives is the greatest reward.”

His best advice for the year ahead?

“Just do it. The greatest plan only works if you get started and stay consistent.”
