The New Year is the perfect time to try alternative fitness routines. Below are my recommendations for a holistic wellness experience in Winston-Salem.

Fitness classes:

Club Pilates

371 Lower Mall Dr.

Pure Barre

114K Reynolda Village Way or 205 S. Stratford Rd.

I would be lying if I said workouts are part of my daily life. With that said, I can’t dispute the proven physical and mental benefits that exercise offers, and I urge readers to try a class at Club Pilates or Pure Barre. These 50-minute sessions are low intensity and rewarding, with a focus on flexibility and muscle strength. At both Club Pilates and Pure Barre, the first class is free with subsequent classes priced around $35.

Massage therapy:

Massage and Bodywork

4250 Goodyear Dr.

In my opinion, massages are worthwhile indulgences. A common misconception is that massages are only useful for relaxation, but some research shows that they may provide other short-term health benefits, such as reducing pain.

One of the most talented massage therapists in the area is Erin Rudday at Winston-Salem Massage and Body Work. Erin’s services include therapeutic and deep tissue massages, cupping, myofascial release and trigger point treatments. Her sessions range from 30 to 90 minutes at a standardized price of $70 to $170, respectively, with tip included. Her time slots tend to fill up weeks in advance, testifying to the individualized and coveted experience she offers. Don’t hesitate to book ahead – the wait will pay off.

Contrast Therapy:

Pure Sweat Studios

747 Summit St.

It sounds disconcerting at first, but switching between unbearably hot saunas and unbearably icy cold plunges can be a therapeutic practice. Some research indicates that the temperature contrast may support circulation and accelerate muscle healing. Pure Sweat Studios offers new client specials priced at three sessions for $150, or a sauna-only experience for three sessions starting at $75.

Reiki:

Free Rooted Wellness

717 S. Marshall St.

If you asked me a year ago if I was familiar with Reiki or if I would ever spend my free time trying it, the answer to both questions would have been no. Since then, however, I have discovered that the Japanese spiritual practice can be a truly restorative experience.

Reiki therapists place their hands lightly on their clients’ bodies and apply vibrations they say promote balance and healing. At Free Rooted Wellness, Kari Allison brought me to my most relaxed state for an hour and a half. I have no words to fully communicate the feeling.

Kari offers a two-hour initial consultation for anyone new to Reiki.
