Cold winter weather did little to dampen students’ outlook on the new year.

As the spring semester begins, students are entering the new year with a mix of excitement and practical goals.

When a small but diverse sample of students were asked about resolutions or aspirations, their responses were similar, with the most popular being to improve time management, to focus on health and to excel in school.

Several students said improving daily habits was a priority as the semester begins.

“I want to be healthier,” Patrick Daniel, a film studies major, said. “It’s something I’ve struggled to stick with.” He plans to reach this goal by hiking with his dog.

Others said managing distractions was a key focus.

“I’m trying to stop procrastinating, even with small things,” Cody Smiler, a computer science major, said, adding that he plans to clear thousands of photos from his phone to free up storage.

Some students said long-term stability and completion of their degrees were central to their goals for the year.

“I’m a single mom with two kids, and by finishing this, I’ll be able to better support them and reduce stress,” Lauren Rogers said. Rogers is a nursing student graduating in May.

Others said they are approaching the new year with measured expectations rather than major changes.

Grace Prince, a digital media and communication major, speaks for students unwilling to give into the frenzy of the new year.

“I don’t imagine this year will be too different from last year,” she said.

Many students share similar goals this year and are taking intentional steps to reach them.

Rachel Lisonbe, a nursing student, said, “Wherever your feet are, that’s where you need to be in your mind too.” Many students are focusing on their health, managing time and making challenging but important decisions as the new year begins.
