Kayla Itsines, an Australian fitness entrepreneur, has built an exercise empire over the past decade, amassing 15.6 million Instagram followers. According to a report from Fortune, she first found success with her 12-week “Bikini Body Guide” (BBG) fitness program, a bootstrapped business that made her a self-made millionaire at age 22.
She later rebranded the venture into the personal training platform Sweat App, which garnered an online community of 50 million members. Six years later, Itsines sold Sweat to fitness platform iFIT for $400 million.
Instead of retiring, Itsines focused on making her fortune last by investing in various ventures. One unconventional investment has proven particularly successful. “The first thing that ever made me money that I was so excited that I bought was a petrol station,” Itsines said in an interview with The School of Hard Knocks. “And I was like, Wow. Out of all the millions of dollars, its so cool to see rent coming in from a gas station.”
For those seeking financial success, Itsines offered simpler advice than selling a company for hundreds of millions. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” she continued, recommending people diversify their wealth across different industries. She advised that everyone should be “diversifying your wealth, because one day the internet might shut off and it will be gone.”
This strategy of diversification is echoed by other investing figures like Mohnish Pabrai and Warren Buffett. Buffett, who now has a $143 billion fortune, advised, “Start young,” during a 1999 Berkshire Hathaway meeting. “We started building this little snowball on top of a very long hill…We started at a very early age in rolling the snowball down, and of course…the nature of compound interest is that it behaves like a snowball.”
