Hen beauty contest in rural Colombia
The contest consists of dressing up and adorning the participating hens with traditional outfits representing different regions and institutions.
“Today we are participating in an activity called the hen’s beauty pageant. It is something traditional in the vereda (a rural hamlet or small rural community in Colombia). This pageant has been going on for quite a while; the hens are decorated, styled, and there are parades,” explains one of the contenders.
Here, hens are not just ordinary barnyard birds; they are true queens prepared with dedication. For a week, the hens are trained to get used to their outfits so they can confidently strut during the show. It is a process full of affection and careful attention.
“The hen must, first of all, be lively; second, she must be trained for a week with the clothes and the dress so she gets used to them. You have to be very careful that the outfit doesn’t squeeze her in other words, that there is no animal mistreatment. You have to pamper them and love them a lot,” explained one of the participating owners.
Criteria for choosing the winning hen
The choice of the winning hen does not depend solely on outward beauty. Judges take into account the animal’s health, her attitude, the originality of the costume, and above all, the connection between the hen and her caretaker. Creativity plays a key role: hens are seen wearing traditional Paisa outfits, colorful capes, tiny hats, and details that reflect the local identity.
Respect for animal welfare is a fundamental principle. It is ensured that the costumes do not squeeze or bother the hens, and practices that could cause them stress or harm are strictly prohibited.
This year, the winning hen is named María Eugenia. She represented the National Police and wore a black hat with blue and green details, along with a blue poncho with green accents the colors of the police uniform. Her calm demeanor and the charm with which she paraded made her a favorite among both the audience and the judges.
A rural tradition celebrating life and humility
Hen beauty contests are mainly celebrated in veredas and rural townships of Antioquia, Boyaca, and Cundinamarca departments, although in recent years it has gained popularity in other rural regions. It is common to see it as part of agricultural festivals and local fairs, where the community gathers to share traditional food, campesino music, and folk dances.
Besides strengthening the sense of belonging and rural pride, this contest highlights the importance of caring for and valuing farm animals not only as a source of food, but as sentient beings who accompany the daily lives of farming families.
Hen beauty pageants have become a symbol of the ingenuity and joy of Colombia’s rural communities. In the words of organizers and participants, this contest proves that in Colombia, even the humblest creature can become a queen.
