Saturday February 8 is the Heart Walk and Wellness Expo
ONALASKA, Wis. (WXOW) – A free community event this weekend is aiming to bring heart health education, physical activity and wellness resources together under one roof.
The R.W. Houser Family YMCA and Emplify Health by Gundersen are hosting the annual Heart Walk and Wellness Expo on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the YMCA in Onalaska.
Participants are encouraged to come at any point during the event to walk the indoor track and visit wellness booths set up along the route.
More than 30 booths will be featured this year, an increase from last year, with information focused on heart health and overall wellness.
“My team for the Integrated Center for Education will be talking about CPR and why that’s important for our community to know,” Emplify Health by Gundersen Integrated Center for Education Director Carley Buisman said. “We will also have nutrition therapy, athletic trainers, Tri-State Ambulance will be there.”
Gundersen Air, Seven Rivers CAPE and Bubba’s Fund will also be at the expo.
February is nationally recognized as Heart Month, and Buisman say the timing of the event is intentional.
“We really want them to take away why heart health is so important,” Buisman said. “Whether you have heart issues or not, taking care of your body, your mind — it all affects everything within your body. And you heart is a big component of that.”
Buisman said the event is designed to be accessible to people at every stage of life, whether they are actively managing heart-related conditions or simply looking to learn more about prevention and healthy habits.
In addition to the walking route and wellness booths, the event will include activities for children and educational displays along the track highlighting heart health information and patient stories.
The event is free and open to the public.
YMCA membership is not required, though non-members will be asked to sign a waiver upon arrival.
Buisman said attendees can also participate in prize drawings by visiting a designated number of booths during the expo.
