A newly published study has found that the ingredient phenylcapsaicin, marketed as aXivite by ingredient supplier aXichem, boosts performance in CrossFit athletes, as well as improving recovery when taken before a workout.
The research, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, used 50 trained athletes and assessed delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and countermovement jump (CMJ) at 24- and 48-hours post-session.
Throughout the session, heart rate, capillary lactate, rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and perceived recovery status (PRS) were also monitored.
Participants took 2.5 mg phenylcapsaicin or a placebo 45 minutes before the workout.
Study results
The athletes who took aXivite were able to complete more squats at a greater load than the athletes who took the placebo.
Those who took the supplement were able to maintain weightlifting performance during training, although this was only significant for men.
Subjects who took aXiVite also experienced a decrease in delayed onset muscle soreness compared with those on placebo.
Collectively, the results show that CrossFit athletes can improve performance and speed recovery with phenylcapsaicin supplementation.
“This peer-reviewed validation is the key that gives the necessary scientific support to continue to grow in this market,” said Lucas Altepost, Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
