Kelvin Mitchell, interim police chief for the Town of Mosses, addressed citizens at the town’s Jan. 20 meeting. The former Hayneville Police Chief defended his fitness to act as Mosses chief amid citizen concerns that he may not be the best man for the job.
Mitchell told town leaders and citizens about efforts to get the Mosses police department back up and running. Then, he addressed accusations which he said came up at the town’s December meeting.
“There were some accusations about me last time [the council] had a meeting,” Mitchell said. “I want to clear them up.”
Mitchell said he received several reports that a woman implied his involvement in the release of a man he called Octivia Demetrius Mitchell, who he said killed Shenado Hill in a shooting at the Mosses Meat Market on Feb. 5, 2025.
“I understand she said I was related to the young man,” Mitchell said. “My mother is from Butler County, and my father’s from Valdosta, Georgia by way of Miami, Florida. That young man is from Detroit, Michigan.”
Mitchell claimed his only connection with the suspect came from a prior incident. He said the suspect trusted him, choosing to surrender to Mitchell in Montgomery. According to Mitchell, other Hayneville police officers traveled to Montgomery and assumed custody of the man before transporting him to the Lowndes County Jail.
But Hill’s mother, AnnieMae Hill-Myles, and his aunt, Lisa Hill-Butler, tell a different version of the story.
Hill-Butler said social media posts made by the suspect claim he holds the keys to Hayneville. She recalled hearing he was part of an armed robbery using firearms reported missing from Hayneville PD during Mitchell’s time as chief.
