In general terms, veganism is a philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to reject and exclude, as far as possible, all forms of exploitation and cruelty towards animals for human benefit.

In recent years, the movement has generated sharply divided opinions: on one side are its supporters, and on the other its critics. Within this context, nutrition expert and social media creator David Jimeno appeared on the podcast Golden Circle, where he discussed several issues related to food, and veganism in particular.

“Veganism doesn’t exist… That’s it, it’s not clickbait or anything,” the nutritionist says at the outset. He argues that understanding this claim requires grasping “two things”: “First, you need to know the definition of veganism, which is the movement that condemns all animal suffering, exploitation and death for human consumption, whether in the form of products, food or anything else. Then you need to understand how the world works today,” he explains.

Jimeno adds that when you look closely at modern agriculture, the reality is not what many people imagine: “Vegetables don’t come from the garden of an old man who sells them to you in a wooden box; they come from monocultures where a brutal amount of agrochemicals are used.”

Continuing his argument, the nutrition expert states that “to pollinate all those plants and produce the fruits and vegetables we consume”, it is necessary to rely on, or exploit as he describes it, an animal: bees.

“What many people don’t know is that in Spain there are a huge number of companies that rent out bees to pollinate entire fields,” Jimeno concludes.
