Mama Bears Beauty Supply and Salon in Abilene is spotlighting entrepreneurship during Black History Month through essential hair care and community connection.
ABILENE, Texas — During Black History Month, African American owned businesses across West Texas are being recognized for their impact, resilience and role in strengthening local communities. In Abilene, one business making a difference is Mama Bears Beauty Supply and Salon, located inside the Mall of Abilene.
Co-owner Stephanie Phillips said opening Mama Bears has been a lifelong dream and one she is proud to share with the community.
“It’s an honor to be one of the few Taylor County members to own a business, especially to be located here in the Mall of Abilene,” Phillips said.
Mama Bears Beauty Supply and Salon offers a wide selection of hair products along with full salon services, serving customers with a variety of hair care needs. Phillips said the idea came from recognizing a gap in the local market.
“We saw an opportunity where it was needed in the community, and we jumped on it and opened our store,” she said.
Now nearing its second year in business, Mama Bears has grown from a small startup into a welcoming space where customers say they feel seen, valued and supported.
Regular customer Birdie-Kate Calvery said the personal connection keeps her coming back.
“It’s fun. She always wants to hear about your day, and she always makes you feel special,” Calvery said.
Phillips said the mission goes beyond beauty services. Building relationships and creating a sense of belonging are central to the business.
“We have the salon that caters to all hair care needs, and we’re able to be personal here,” she said.
As Black History Month continues, Mama Bears Beauty Supply and Salon stands as a reflection of African American entrepreneurship, perseverance and the power of community connection in Abilene.
