LA JOLLA – Retirement has never been so modern.

Vi at La Jolla Village has inaugurated Vista 360 Well-Being, what it calls a new approach to wellness.

Vista 360 Well-Being says that it redefines modern retirement through a community-wide platform focused on connection, fulfillment, and freedom for seniors.

“Vista 360 recognizes how older adults want to learn and develops a wellness culture designed to reflect an active, outward-facing lifestyle,” said Mellany Hanson, Vi’s lifestyle director.

“Vista 360 was created as a platform that really feels organic, and is not so much prescriptive, but is part of our culture at Vi. It is a model of well-being that reflects what older adults really want, a service we offer to our residents.”

The program was designed to center on wellness while connecting it to people’s experiences in daily life, added Hanson, citing an example of the program in action.

She noted Vi recently had a flamenco dancer performing to live music for patrons during a happy hour with refreshments.

“We tied Vista 360 in with our food and beverage department to get residents actively involved in the music and dance experience,” Hanson said.

Vista says that its perks include expanded lifelong learning, brain-health programming developed with leading neuroscience partners, curated cultural and culinary outings across San Diego, and resident-led initiatives reflecting the area’s vibrant arts, wellness, and coastal lifestyle. It also offers a “brain vitality studio” in which technology is used to support cognitive health.

Hanson added that Vista provides a “layered experience,” engaging residents individually and collectively in groups of various sizes.

Regarding Vista’s objectives, Hanson said: “The core objective is to engage residents with life in meaningful ways both inside and outside the community. Through the creation of a strong social network, we see increased residential leadership, involvement, and engagement. We’ll know Vista is successful if residents see it as part of how they live on a day-to-day basis.”

Vista was developed through deep resident engagement, cross-organizational collaboration, and a research study of more than 2,000 Baby Boomers ages 68 and older, examining attitudes and expectations around aging and retirement.

The research revealed a clear shift toward prioritizing physical and mental well-being as the foundation for a fulfilling life, alongside a desire for new and diverse experiences that foster connection, curiosity, and continued engagement with the outside world.

“Today’s seniors are rewriting the rules of aging,” said Gary Smith, Vi’s president and chief executive officer.

“They seek autonomy, inspiration, and meaningful connection, and they expect the places they live in to evolve alongside them. Vista was created to meet that moment. It’s not a program layered on top of daily life, it’s a philosophy that informs everything we do.”

Vi is an operator of 10 continuing care retirement communities nationwide, including in La Jolla.
