CRYSTAL FALLS — The Iron Area Health Foundation will sponsor a Wellness Wednesday presentation at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Young’s Recreational Complex.

The topic for the February Wellness Wednesday will be “Reading and Writing — Just for the Health of It,” presented by Nancy Besonen, self described off-beat journalist.

Besonen is a native Chicago South Sider, whose problem with fishing, landed her in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, reporting for the L’anse Sentinel to help support her habit.

Her weekly humor column titled “Off the Hook” filled vital white space while having raucous good fun.

The focus of her Wellness Wednesday talk will be healthful benefits of reading and writing, with an overall emphasis on keeping it, and life in general, light.

It will also include readings from her two books, predictably titled “Off the Hook” and “Off the Hook Too.”

Participants will be encouraged to share their own favorite titles and authors, and tips for finding the time, place and paper for journaling.

“Journaling is a wonderful way of keeping the past present,” Besonen said. “You can do it on those ridiculously small squares on your calendar, or in a securely locked diary for more outspoken bits. It preserves the joys and trials of our youth and helps us remember what we did the day before.”

The event is free of charge and includes a free salad or all attendees.

The Young’s Recreational Complex is at 159 Youngs Lane in Crystal Falls.
