A unique hybrid training space in Bolton is changing the way people approach fitness.
The Performance Unit, based in Breightmet, operates alongside Thrive Gym on Meadow Lane.
Owned by Arron Briggs, Thrive was named Bolton’s Best Gym by The Bolton News in 2025.
Designed to complement the main gym, the Performance Unit delivers class-based functional fitness and HYROX-style training, alongside group personal training and one-to-one coaching.
After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from class members, The Bolton News visited the space to find out what sets it apart.
Owner of the Performance Unit and facility manager at Thrive, Joel Cooper, said the idea came from noticing a gap in what was available to gym-goers.
Joel, 25, said: “The Performance Unit first came about in November 2024.
“I used to do a lot of smaller classes over at Thrive, but there was only so much I could do.”
Joel explained that the large Performance Unit is housed in what was previously a disused boxing gym.

He said: “When Thrive came under new ownership, it was a great opportunity to do something a bit different from other gyms.
“We created this all ourselves, from the flooring to the painting, and then opened it up to our members first.
“It grew at such a fast pace and very quickly went from three classes a week to 19.”
Joel said he could not quite put his finger on why the space took off, but believes the training style played a big part.
“When you look at hybrid lifestyle training, we go for a very balanced approach,” he said.
“At the end of the class, we’re all sweating and have worked really hard, but no one ever injures themselves.
“It’s a nice balance between doing enough and not doing too much.”
Hybrid training combines strength, cardio and functional movements into one multi-model workout approach.
“I think people quite like how different it is to usual training,” Joel added.
“It’s one hour a day where you can crack on, forget about everything and then go home.
“Every single session is different and involves teamwork.”

Jay McDonald, 33, coaches the Performance Unit classes alongside offering personal training sessions in Thrive’s main gym space.
Jay told The Bolton News: “I run a Monday class [at the Performance Unit] which focuses more on partner work and isn’t too intimidating.
“In my Friday class, there’s more teamwork and a bit of friendly competition.
“We all encourage each other when we get tired, and there’s a real community vibe.
“When you’re in the gym, you can just tap out when you’re tired, but in here you’re accountable to your team as well.
“Even as the coach, I join in and train with everyone too.”
