Many people assume they’re getting enough omega-3 in their diet, but research tells a different story. A study from November last year found that over three-quarters of people worldwide are not reaching the recommended omega-3 levels, despite its crucial role in supporting joint health, managing inflammation, and maintaining everyday mobility.

This deficiency often goes unnoticed, largely because modern diets make it challenging to obtain enough omega-3 naturally. With shoppers increasingly looking for potential solutions, one product gaining attention is Dr Vegan’s Omega-3 supplement.

A single pouch is priced at £21.99, but the best value comes with a subscription, with three pouches delivered every 90 days for £53.09 (down from £65.97), which works out at roughly 59p per day. On top of that, shoppers can currently get an extra 15% off using code VOM3, reducing a single pouch to £18.70 and the 90-day subscription to £45.13.

Unlike traditional fish oil supplements, the brand states its Vegan Omega 3 is sourced from algae, the original omega-3 provider in the marine food chain, offering a plant-based alternative that avoids the environmental impact of commercial fishing. Fish don’t produce omega-3 themselves – they obtain it by eating algae.

By sourcing omega-3 directly from algae, these supplements avoid the environmental damage caused by trawling and seabed disruption whilst providing a purer, cleaner oil. Dr Vegan’s product contains 1,000mg of algae oil per dose, offering an optimal balance of 300mg DHA and 150mg EPA – the two fatty acids most closely linked to joint health, brain function, heart wellness and vision, according to the brand, reports the Express, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Being algae-based means there’s no fishy smell or aftertaste, and it avoids the pollutants and harmful substances that can be found in some fish oils. It’s also naturally lower in saturated fats compared to animal-derived omega-3, which is important since high saturated fat intake is associated with raised cholesterol levels.

According to Dr Vegan, omega-3 is needed in every cell across the body and supports skin health, hormone balance, brain performance and inflammation management. Dr Vegan’s Omega 3 has received praise from BBC Good Food as a ‘Highly Recommended’ supplement and boasts an ‘Excellent’ Trustpilot rating, supported by more than 6,000 customer reviews.

Alternatively, MyProtein’s Essential Omega-3 is available for £17.99, down from £23.49, for 250 soft gels. This provides numerous benefits, including being an essential fatty acid, whilst remaining affordable and convenient.

Another alternative is the Solgar Triple Strength Omega-3 100 Softgel Capsules available at Holland and Barrett for £62.48. This product is promoted as a ‘concentrated omega3 supplement providing Solgar’s Triple Strength combination of EPA and DHA to support heart health’.

On Trustpilot, Dr Vegan supplements have received high praise from customers. One user, Mike Harrison, remarked: “It’s good for my brain health. The subscription service means I don’t run out.

“Price is competitive. One teensy moan is that the capsules are slightly tacky, and tend to stick to my pill case. But if you don’t use a pill case, that won’t bother you!”.

Mandy Stewart added her thoughts: “Really helps me and my joints, as I love to regularly work out at the gym. At 54 I’ve really noticed the difference since taking them.”

One customer deducted a star, commenting: “High quality supplements, one of the few sellers that offer different types of omega-3s together and produced from clean, tank-grown algae. I didn’t know there was a hierarchy of omega-3 supplements, but once I learned better, I found that this product offered the best quality/price ratio.”

They further noted: “Knocked off one star for communication – if a supplement sells out, it’s unclear when the stock will be replenished.”

Ellie shared her experience: “I have now been on this product for two years, and I can’t be without it. Highly recommend for anyone who suffers from stiff and painful joints.

“No fishy taste, and brilliant benefits. I have always found cod liver oil beneficial to my health, but I hated what it was and where it came from. In the past, I have tried other omega-3 substitutes that have never come close or have given me an unhappy tum.

“This all changed when I tried Dr Vegan’s Vegan Omega 3! I have been using this product for a month and can’t believe the positive difference in my joints, hair, and skin.”

Ellie went on to say: “It really has taken away my painful and stiff joints, with the added positivity of affecting my sleep in a great way. I have now subscribed, so I never run out!”
