HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – A Huntsville man charged with capital murder of two women testified on his own behalf in an immunity hearing, fighting to avoid a trial.
Tye’Deshun Stevens took the stand on Friday, arguing that he’s innocent of murder. Stevens allegedly shot and killed his apartment neighbors, Sequioya Lamar and D’Asia Morris, on Bonnell Drive in 2023.
In the hearing, Stevens admitted to shooting and killing both women, but he argued he did it in self-defense.
WAFF 48 saw shocking video provided in court on Friday, which was taken by one of the female victims leading up to her death.
In the video, Lamar and Morris are shown yelling at Stevens for slashing their tires, which he admitted to on the stand.
Before the shooting, the women are shown repeatedly threatening Stevens verbally, saying they were going to turn out his pockets.
One of the victims had pepper spray, and Stevens claimed it was in her hand.
He testified that as they moved closer, that’s when she aimed the pepper spray at him and he fired gunshots at both Lamar and Morris. When asked why he did it, Stevens said, “it was either defend myself or become a victim.”
In the video that was taken, the phone is dropped onto the ground before over a dozen gunshots are fired.
Madison County Assistant DA Emily Carroll, who is prosecuting this case, argued the video showed Stevens never looked scared before he ended their lives.
“It was a property dispute that they were having that turned into a verbal altercation that resulted in two girls being slain in the middle of the street, and it is fairly atrocious,” Carroll said. “He is a serious threat to our community and this is a very important case.”
According to an investigator, witnesses at the scene said Stevens walked up to each victim and fired more gunshots afterward. But Stevens denied that.
The judge will make a ruling on this immunity request in the coming days.
