College students in the Atlantic City area are showing a different side of the city — one that goes beyond casinos and nightclubs. Through a new art project, they’re reimagining the iconic shoreline, lighthouse, pier and nature preserves in a creative light.

Visit Atlantic City created its first Artist-in-Residence program with Stockton University’s Visual Arts Program, where sophomores and juniors entered their art into a scholarship competition. The pictures had to focus on AC’s famous places through the eyes of young artists.

“This Artist-in-Residence initiative gives our students a powerful opportunity to engage with Atlantic City as both artists and storytellers,” said Mariana Smith, associate professor of Visual Arts and program chairperson. “By interpreting the city through their own creative lenses, students are not only developing their artistic voices but also contributing to a broader, positive narrative that celebrates Atlantic City’s character, beauty and cultural vitality.”

In January, the selection committee chose one winner, Antonio Rodriguez, who got a $2,500 scholarship, and had his artwork reproduced for gifts given to clients of the Atlantic City Convention Center, where all of the students’ submissions will be showcased throughout the year.

“This initiative brings together creativity, education, and destination marketing in a meaningful way,” said Anthony Molino, vice president of Sales for Visit Atlantic City. “By empowering students to share their vision of Atlantic City, we’re not only supporting emerging artists but also creating lasting impressions for our convention clients.”
