A supplement described as from a “miracle tree” by a nutritional therapist has been recalled because of possible contamination with Salmonella, which can cause death in vulnerable people.
Ambrosia Brands LLC voluntarily recalled many of its Rosabella Moringa Capsules product on Friday.
Some seven Salmonella illnesses, resulting in three hospitalizations, have been recorded that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) report may be linked to Rosabella Moringa Capsules.
Why It Matters
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, while healthy people suffer with fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, the FDA says.
What To Know
The affected Rosabella moringa powder capsules were sold in white plastic bottles with a green label, span dozens of lot codes with 2027 expiration dates, and were sold on the company’s website and TikTok Shop.
All the lots impacted start with 1356 as the Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) number, and end in a -1 or -2 after the lot code, Ambrosia Brands LLC said.
But the company also warned that it is aware of “unauthorized third party distribution to consumers through ebay.com, Shein, or other sites” and urged people to check their lot numbers regardless of where they bought it.
“Customers who have purchased the lots above are asked to dispose of it immediately, do not eat, sell, or serve the product,” the firm said.
Moringa has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of years, and the moringa tree contains nearly 30 vitamins and more than 40 antioxidants, as well as minerals and other phytonutrients. It is native to Northern India and East Africa.
“Moringa is an interesting plant known as the miracle tree due to its impressive nutritional composition,” nutritional therapist Kelly Hopley, of Incorporating Wellness with Kelly Hopley, previously told Newsweek.
“Providing seven times the vitamin C of oranges, rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium too—we can see how it gets its mysterious moniker.”
While evidence is limited moringa is associated with increasing testosterone, balancing blood sugar levels, lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, helping to tackle inflammation, helping to regulate the gut, supporting the immune system, protecting the brain, and more.
What People Are Saying
Ambrosia Brands LLC said: “We continue to diligently investigate, in collaboration with FDA, this possible link of the Salmonella outbreak to Rosebella Moringa Capsules. We have discontinued use and purchase of all raw moringa leaf powder from the raw material supplier of the above referenced lots.
“Ambrosia Brands is conducting this recall voluntarily and takes this matter very seriously. We apologize for the inconvenience and concern this recall may cause our customers.”
What Happens Next
The FDA and CDC will continue traceback and testing to determine the contamination source and whether additional products require recall, updating public advisories as new information emerges.
