The City of Pasadena will host a free Vitality Parent Café on Thursday, February 19, for parents and caregivers of children and youth with special health care needs — offering an evening of peer-led wellness conversation, dinner and childcare at a time when many of those families have little of either to spare.
The event, scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Pacific Clinics Early Head Start, 136 West Peoria Street, uses a structured small-group conversation model focused on parental well-being.
Registration is required and capacity is limited.
The Vitality Café is a wellness program developed by the national nonprofit Be Strong Families. It uses peer-to-peer conversation organized around six domains of health — physical, mental and emotional, spiritual, financial, environmental and social — according to the organization. The model grew out of the Parent Café process, first created in 2007 by parent leaders from Strengthening Families Illinois.
The February 19 event specifically targets families navigating the demands of raising children with special health care needs, according to the City of Pasadena announcement. The flyer for the event describes the focus as “promoting wellness on the roller coaster journey of parenting.”
Free dinner is provided. Childcare is available for children ages 1 to 10, with sensory activities included, according to the announcement.
Pacific Clinics Early Head Start, the venue for the café, has served as a hub for early childhood education in Pasadena since opening its Peoria Street location, which provides free programming for up to 30 children from birth to age 3, according to Pacific Clinics.
