RAPID CITY, S.D.— When it comes to keeping your heart healthy the food you eat plays an important role. Monument Health Registered Dietitian Tamara Henzlik says, “Foods that lower blood pressure cholesterol, that control blood sugars and even reduce inflammation.”
Registered Dietitian Tamara Hanzlik says fresh fruits and vegetables are an important part of a heart healthy diet. She says some are even cardiovascular super stars. Tamara Henzlik says, “Beets have a natural substance in them, nitrates, is what we call them, or that are in them, and they help our arteries dilate and they will help reduce blood pressure.”
When it comes to protein tamara recommends going for lean options like grilled chicken or salmon. Tamara Henzlik says, “Salmon is a good source of omega threes. We know that that helps with lowering triglycerides and just overall heart health. The American Heart Association, they recommend fish two times a week is a good meal planning tip.”
Lastly, Tamara says to reach for the healthy fats when snack time comes around. Tamara Henzlik says, “Your healthy fats would be olive oil that is lower in saturated fat. We always want to find ways to reduce saturated fat for heart health, and then we’ve got avocados, and then nuts and seeds. Forget about pumpkin seeds and chia seeds. Make sure we throw those into salads or oatmeal.”
Tamara says foods we should avoid are those high in saturated fats like fast food. Taking a little time to plan healthy meals can go a long way in keeping you heart strong.
