Marvel’s Chris Pratt is celebrating Lent this year, and he wants you to join him.

“What’s holding you back in life? We all have something that’s holding us back from being that man or woman God truly wants us to be,” Pratt said in a recent video partnership with the Hallow prayer app.

“That’s the beauty of Lent,” he continued. “We get to pray and fast every day leading up to the resurrection of Jesus on Easter and really let Him free us from our addictions and attachments.”

He encouraged viewers to make Lent more meaningful than just giving up sweets.

“Fill your heart with the Lord by praying every day with me, Mark Wahlberg and millions of others on the Hallow app. Step into who God has called you to be, and as Mark says… ‘Stay prayed up,’” he said.

Cru Ministries explains Lent is the 40 days from Ash Wednesday to the Saturday before Easter. The number of days is the same that Jesus and Moses went through during their intense fasting experiences. During these 40 days, believers focus on prayer, fasting and giving. Fasting is meant as a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice and a devotion of more time spent with God.

After Jesus’ and Moses’ 40 days ended, they were prepared to face the next challenge ahead of them. So early Christians adopted the same practice. Ground Work Online says the practice originated after the Council of Nicea in 325 AD.

Mark Wahlberg also shared about Lent on his socials.

“God is changing lives, and He wants to change yours, too,” Wahlberg began in a video. “Join me and millions of other Christians around the world on Hallow this year for Lent. You’ll pray with me, Chris Pratt, Jonathan Roumie, Father Mike and a whole lot more as we all come together to focus on returning to Jesus.”

He ended his message with a note of encouragement for viewers to pray every day.

THE CHOSEN’s Jonathan Roumie also partnered with Hallow for Lent.

“Hard to believe we’re already just one week away from Lent,” he said on Feb. 11. “…I truly feel that this is going to be the most powerful and transformational Lent of our lives. The theme this year, The Return, is all about returning to The Father like never before.”

As Lent approaches, it’s a great time to think about what you could fast from and pray over and spend more time in God’s word.
