The United States is home to 63 national parks and hundreds of other protected sites that showcase America’s natural beauty and cultural history.
These parks and sites cover 34 million hectares (85 million acres) of protected land, preserving stunning landscapes, historic monuments and national treasures like the Grand Canyon.
Yellowstone became America’s first national park in 1872 when President Ulysses S. Grant signed a law setting aside 890,000 hectares (2.2 million acres) spanning parts of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana “as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” The New River Gorge in West Virginia became the newest U.S. national park after achieving the designation in December 2020.
With so much to explore, we created this quiz to help you decide which national park to visit on your next vacation. From popular destinations, such as Yellowstone and Yosemite, to off-the-beaten-path places like Kobuk Valley in Alaska, there’s a U.S. national park for every adventurer.
