The Eta Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated brought the community together for a day focused on health, wellness, and prevention.
Attendees received free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, learned hands-only CPR techniques, and had the opportunity to speak directly with mental health professionals. Organizers also emphasized the importance of healthy eating habits and maintaining routine medical checkups.
Event coordinator Quarletta Pinkey and Joantae Henry said the goal of the health fair was to help community members feel more comfortable with health screenings and better understand their personal health numbers.
“A lot of times when you’re in the hospital you see people on the sick side, but now we’re seeing well people and teaching them about the importance of prevention, early prevention, protection, and all that to help prevent emergency encounters,” said Joantae Henry.
Pinkey added that the purpose of the event was to encourage people to know their numbers, understand where they stand health-wise, and follow up with care if needed.
The CARES Committee says additional health-focused community events are planned for the future.
