The landscape at 2501 Mohansic Avenue in Yorktown looks significantly different these days as construction on Guiding Eyes for the Blind’s new Wellness & Training Center continues swiftly.
The 47,000-square-foot facility is quickly taking shape, with major structural and exterior work now underway. The project remains on track for its anticipated opening in the fourth quarter of 2026.
“This center will be a tremendous asset that fosters independence for the nearly 200 individuals currently on the waitlist for a guide dog,” said Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman.
Located just two miles from the organization’s existing headquarters, this 12-acre site represents a transformative leap for the nonprofit. Once operational, the center will feature expanded training capacity; state-of-the-art veterinary care; simulated real-life training environments; and staff/volunteer hubs.
With the exterior shell nearing completion, interior fit-outs and specialized kennel installations will begin in the coming months.
“Working with the Town of Yorktown has truly been a pleasure,” said Christopher Perry, President & CEO of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. “Their Building Department brings a level of professionalism and efficiency that we deeply appreciate. From the initial plan review onwards, communication has been thoughtful and clear, the staff has been knowledgeable and supportive, and the entire process has felt collaborative and well organized — helping us stay on schedule.”
Guiding Eyes continues to welcome the support of the philanthropic community to see this project through its final stages. For a legacy that has already produced over 10,000 guide dog teams since 1954, the Mohansic Avenue facility ensures that the next 10,000 will have an even more advanced start to their life-changing partnerships.
