What’s in your supplement stack? How do you decide what to add or subtract? The online supplement industry is booming right now, with influencers and Wellness podcasters leaning into selling powders, pills, and green drinks. You’ve probably heard that supplements exist in an unregulated Wild West, and it’s true. The FDA does not approve supplements in the same way that it does prescription drugs. So what really happens inside a supplement factory? We toured the headquarters of Thorne, one of the most. Well respected supplement factories in the US to see how it all works. Thorn is a relatively small player in the supplement space, but business is good online. Data shows supplement sales are up 10% overall online over the past year, even as people pull back their spending in other areas. Creatine is one of Thorne’s biggest sellers right now. It’s been a gym goer staple for years for building muscle mass and now it’s really having a moment as a sort of cognitive brain booster. And this is just based on some. Early evidence, Now new studies suggest it could have possible brain aging benefits, and that early research is generating a lot of hype. Other bestsellers at Thorne include vitamin D, turmeric extract, electrolytes for hydration and even some new testosterone booster products. But doctors say it’s often how people choose to have their supplements that’s the biggest concern. Many buy based on influenza recommendations or their friends ideas, and not because of any sort of lab testing. Or doctor’s advice. Thorne founder Al Zapp says that’s not the best way to figure out what you need there. They talk about their products being so superior to someone else’s, but there’s really no science there. And because companies don’t have to prove a supplement is effective before they sell it, people are left to figure this out on their own. Doctors and longevity experts told us a supplement should be just that, supplementing your healthy lifestyle. There is early research on things like creatine for brain health, but we don’t have solid evidence yet what we do have. Strong evidence for are the things you’ve heard about many times. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and social connection for longevity. If you’re considering adding something to your stack, experts say one thing that can help is testing your blood first. You may discover your blood levels are perfectly normal and you maybe don’t need the tweaks you thought you did. Or you might end up adding one or two pills into your routine. Doing some more testing and discovering that seems to have helped. Read more about supplements and experts. Best advice for how to build your own personal stack. That businessinsider.com.
