LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)– Getting fit for a good cause. That’s the story of Matthew Schellinkhout, who spent the past several months competing in the Colossal Mr. Health and Fitness competition while raising money to fight childhood cancer.

Schellinkhout, a fitness enthusiast, said he discovered the online competition through social media and decided to take a chance.

“I thought it was a good opportunity. It was an online competition going through Facebook, social media, Instagram, and then this competition came up and I said, you know, I’ll throw my hat in the ring,” Schellinkhout said.

Competing With a Purpose

The competition offered a $20,000 grand prize, but Schellinkhout said his motivation went beyond recognition or prize money.

“I knew I had to get the message out there. It was a combination of, hey I’m promoting self, hey I’m promoting muscle fitness — and then children with cancer,” he said.

Throughout the competition, Schellinkhout used his platform to raise funds and awareness for the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting childhood cancer and supporting affected families.

“Taking time and thinking about them, and then thinking about me exercising — they want to do what we’re doing. They want to run around and pose in magazines and do other things, and then they have cancer and can’t make it. How are we going to help them?” Schellinkhout said.

Support From Near and Far

Schellinkhout said his journey resonated with many people. One supporter donated $500 after following his story, and he even received contributions from donors in the Netherlands.

Although he learned the day before our interview that he did not advance to the top five finalists, Schellinkhout still finished seventh overall in the competition.

While he admits he was disappointed, he says the outcome doesn’t overshadow the impact.

“All the work — it’s still positive,” he said.

Continuing the Mission

Schellinkhout says he has no plans to slow down and hopes to continue raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer research and support.

For Schellinkhout, the competition may be over — but the mission continues.
