The death of a fitness instructor who had been working and living in The Villages has been ruled a suicide.

Ted Troth, 51, who worked as a fitness trainer at Genesis Health Clubs at Spanish Springs Town Square, was found dead in a lean-to on Tuesday in the Adirondacks in upstate New York, according to New York State Police.

Troth, who had rented a home in Villa Valdez in the Village of Rio Ranchero, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. An autopsy at Glens Falls Hospital in New York revealed the cause of death.

According to state police, Troth had been renting a cabin at Rowe’s Adirondack Cabins in Schroon Lake. The owner notified authorities when Troth failed to check out of his lodging Tuesday morning. He was last seen on Feb. 19.

Forest rangers joined state police in the search for Troth and found him at the Oxshoe Pond lean-to. His body was turned over to the county coroner.

Troth had texted a friend here in The Villages that he had gone “off the grid” and was in upstate New York. It was the last communication the friend had from Troth.

In 2025 in honor of his birthday, Troth sought donations for the Stop Soldier Suicide non-profit organization.
