Fatigue, hair fall, brain fog? Experts explain how Vitamin B12 deficiency quietly impacts women’s energy, hair and mood and how to fix it.fontVitamin B12 plays a major role in nerve regulation, brain function, DNA synthesis and red blood cell production (Image: Canva)

Fatigue that lingers despite rest. Hair that feels thinner month after month. Brain fog that makes simple tasks harder than they should be. For many women, these symptoms are brushed off as stress, hormones, or a busy schedule. But sometimes, the explanation is far more basic and biological. A quiet nutritional shortfall, particularly Vitamin B12 deficiency, may be working behind the scenes, affecting energy, mood, and even hair health without obvious warning signs.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is an often overlooked cause of persistent tiredness, hair thinning, or mood changes,” says Dr Vaishnavi Barde, Doctors Team Lead at Traya Health. She notes that studies suggest up to 15–20 per cent of women in India may have low or borderline levels. Adding to this, Abhishree Goyal, sports nutritionist and co-founder of Nuvana, explains, “Vitamin B12 deficiency is more hidden in women because it often hides behind everyday complaints and routines.”

Why Vitamin B12 Matters More Than You Think

Vitamin B12 plays a central role in red blood cell formation, nerve function, and DNA synthesis. When levels fall, the body struggles to produce healthy red blood cells, often resulting in megaloblastic anaemia.

“Fatigue is often the earliest and most common symptom,” says Dr Barde. She adds that women may also notice dizziness, shortness of breath, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, balance issues, and even cognitive changes like memory lapses or brain fog. Mood fluctuations, pale skin, and a rapid heartbeat can also appear gradually.

Because these symptoms develop slowly, many women normalise them, assuming they’re simply part of modern life.

The Surprising Link To Hair Thinning

Hair health is particularly sensitive to nutrient deficiencies. Hair follicles are among the fastest-dividing cells in the body, demanding a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients.

“When B12 levels are low, oxygen delivery to the scalp reduces, disrupting the hair growth cycle,” explains Dr Barde. This can push more strands into the shedding phase, leading to diffuse thinning and excessive hair fall. Goyal echoes this connection. She says, “When B12 drops, the body struggles to deliver oxygen efficiently to tissues. That’s why women experience constant fatigue and diffuse hair thinning together.”

Women with vegetarian diets, heavy menstrual cycles, pregnancy, lactation, PCOS, or digestive issues such as IBS and acidity are at higher risk. Long-term use of antacids or metformin may further impair absorption.

Why Are Women More Vulnerable?

Biology and lifestyle both play a role. Menstruation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding increase nutritional demands. At the same time, vegetarian or low-protein diets – common across India – may lack adequate natural sources of B12, which are primarily found in animal-based foods.

“The symptoms are gradual and often mistaken for stress, ageing or hormonal imbalance. But the root cause may simply be nutritional,” says Goyal.

Diagnosis And Recovery

The good news: identifying the problem is straightforward. A simple blood test can measure serum B12 levels. Treatment may include oral supplements, fortified foods, dietary adjustments, or intramuscular injections in more severe cases. “With medically guided supplementation, symptoms are reversible,” says Goyal, noting improvements in energy, focus, and hair strength within weeks to months.

Small, persistent changes in how you feel – low stamina, brittle hair, mental fog – shouldn’t always be dismissed. Screening for Vitamin B12 deficiency is a simple step that can prevent long-term complications and restore vitality. Sometimes, better health begins not with a complex fix, but with replenishing what your body quietly needs.
