As GLP-1 weight loss medications become more popular, ShopRite wants to ensure that consumers who start the drugs have access to nutritional support.

Beginning the week of Feb. 23, customers filling their first GLP-1 prescription at one of the supermarket chain’s pharmacies will receive a free kit filled with guidance, product samples and easy nutrition habits.

According to the Keasbey-based Wakefern Food Corp. banner, each Wellness Your Way starter kit includes a comprehensive guide featuring recommendations from ShopRite’s registered dietitian along with advice on protein intake, hydration and simple lifestyle changes. The resource also contains quick, nutritious recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Additionally, the kit includes samples of products, like Oikos Protein Shake, Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier and Vital Proteins Collagen Powder. It also packs coupons for grocery items, such as Pre Brands premium lean beef, Healthy Choice frozen meals and The Fruitist Co. fresh blueberries.

Simple tools, strong support

According to ShopRite, the Wellness Your Way starter kits are available for a limited time while supplies last. Tips, recipes and other advice can also be found online at the Wellness Your Way landing page.

Wakefern Vice President of Pharmacy and Wellness Aaron Sapp said, “We’ve seen a growing number of customers seeking GLP‑1 medications, and we want to make sure they feel supported from the moment they fill that first prescription. These starter kits provide simple tools and tips that help people take those important early steps to be successful in their weight loss journey.”

By the numbers

About 6% of adults say they use a GLP-1.

While it is unclear how many Americans currently take GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, a Kaiser Family Foundation survey found that 12% of U.S. adults (about 31 million) have tried the medications at some point.

The 2024 study from KFF also reported that about 6% of adults said they still use a GLP-1.

Though it’s unknown how long patients will stay on medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, data shows many individuals stop using the drugs within one to two years of starting.
