CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Johnson C. Smith University is gearing up for its 19th Annual Health Fair and Career Extravaganza—an event designed to promote wellness, opportunity, and community connection.
And this year, organizers are adding something that might just be the freshest part of the whole experience: free haircuts, thanks to a partnership with No Grease Barber Shop, a longtime Charlotte staple.
Dr. Robert Lindsey from Johnson C. Smith University joins us, along with Damian and Jermaine from No Grease, to talk about how looking good part of can actually be staying healthy.
People hear “health fair” and think blood pressure checks and pamphlets but the fair is much more.
“We go far beyond the traditional health‑fair setup. Yes, we have screenings, but we also offer interactive workshops, mental‑health resources, fitness demonstrations, and nutrition guidance. We want people to experience health, not just read about it” says Dr. Lindsey.
“This event is hands‑on, energetic, and designed so every age group—students, families, seniors—walks away with something helpful.”
This is the 19th year and the event has become an important tradition. “Our community counts on this fair. For many of our neighbors in Charlotte, this is where they get access to free screenings or connect with professionals they might not otherwise meet” Dr. Lindsey remarks.
“Nineteen years in, it’s become a symbol of our commitment to serve. Our mission here at JCSU has always been rooted in empowering the community, and this event puts that mission into action.”
The fair combines health resources with career opportunities. Health and economic stability go hand in hand. When people feel supported in their wellness, they’re more confident pursuing job opportunities—and when they have stable employment, they’re more likely to invest in their health. He adds
“by bringing employers and health providers together, we’re helping attendees strengthen both sides of their future.
We wanted to highlight that wellness isn’t just medical—it’s also about confidence, identity, and presentation. A haircut can change how you feel the moment you look in the mirror.
No Grease has always been a trusted gathering place in Charlotte, so partnering with them made perfect sense. Barbers often serve as informal counselors in the community—they listen, they encourage, they uplift. That’s health, too.”
The 19th Annual Health Fair and Career Extravaganza take place tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University.
From free health screenings to employment opportunities—and yes, even fresh haircuts—it’s a day focused on learning, connecting, and celebrating community wellness. For more information follow on Instagram @JCSUniversity.
