Xtreme Fitness Gym entered a new chapter on Wednesday, Feb. 18, as ownership of the longtime Beaumont fitness center was officially transferred. Gil and Ivonne Sanchez shook hands and signed paperwork, passing the gym to Adam Castro, owner of Nutrishop Beaumont. A farewell lunch was held at the gym to recognize the outgoing owners and celebrate the transition with members and supporters.

The gathering gave longtime members an opportunity to thank the Sanchez’s for their dedication and 22 years of commitment to the business. Guests shared memories, reflected on the gym’s growth, and welcomed Castro as the new owner.

“I put a lot of sweat and long hours into this place. I grew up in a gym, so this was fun for me. I work out here and meet a lot of great people. Yet I’m ready for retirement, and I know Adam and his family will take great care of this place,” Gil Sanchez said.

Xtreme Fitness was first established as the athletic club in 1982, when Marilyn and Greg Barker renovated the building after it had served as a real estate office. Over time, the space evolved into a local fitness destination known for its old-school atmosphere and strong sense of community. The gym maintains a traditional training style, featuring iron weights and plates, as well as dedicated cardio and abdominal workout rooms.

“I love coming back here; it always feels like home. It’s been in the best care with Gil because he’s done an amazing job keeping up with the community here. When we first started it was way smaller and my husband built everything in there,” Marilyn Barker said.

Throughout its history, Xtreme Fitness has served members ranging from experienced lifters to individuals beginning their fitness journeys. Many members say the gym’s welcoming environment and supportive culture have helped create lasting friendships and accountability among those who train there.

During their ownership, the Sanchezes worked to preserve the gym’s identity while continuing to serve a growing membership base. Their hands-on approach and personal connections with members helped maintain the close- knit atmosphere that regulars have come to appreciate.

With new ownership comes plans for thoughtful expansion while honoring the gym’s foundation. Castro said his goal is to maintain the character that longtime members value while gradually introducing improvements that enhance the overall experience.

“My goal is to make some upgrades, but keep it old school,” Castro said “This isn’t the corporate vibe, when you come in here both women and men have a specific energy. They’re here putting in the work. No glitz or glamor, there’s a bit of an attitude, and I like that. People think it’s a ‘bro’ gym, but the women here get after it. It’s a special environment.”

As the gym moves into its next phase, both past and present owners share a common goal of keeping Xtreme Fitness a place where individuals feel supported in reaching their health and fitness goals. With new leadership in place, the gym looks to continue serving the Beaumont community while building on the legacy established over decades.
