TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Stormont Vail Health is hosting its first-ever Women’s Wellness Summit, an event designed to help women focus on their own health amid the demands of caring for others.

Julia Wiebler, RN, Stormont Vail’s director of primary care, said women are often looked to as caregivers. She said the summit is a response to that reality.

“Women are responsible for a lot,” Wiebler said.

What the summit will cover

The event will have two primary areas of focus. The first is hormonal health.

“Weight gain — that can all be related to hormonal changes as well as the stress. There are so many different things that hormones affect that women don’t realize,” Wiebler said.

The second focus addresses women’s roles as caregivers. Experts will discuss health screenings and immunizations for women and their families, as well as physical therapy strategies.

“Some women, maybe after they had a child, didn’t really deal with some of those physical therapy things they can do to be healthier,” Wiebler said.

Additional topics include personal finances, separating diet fads from practical nutrition guidance, and mental health.

“Mental health is a huge part of this — making sure that you are dealing with those stressors and that you’re prepared so that way you can take care of yourself but then others around you. You’re no good if you do not take care of yourself,” Wiebler said.

Wiebler said social media is filled with health misinformation, and the summit offers women a chance to hear directly from experts in person.
