COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture warns the formula may still be available nationwide.
A notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula was recalled because of potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum. Regulators in other states have recently found the product on shelves at surplus and distressed food sellers, including discount, salvage or outlet stores.
The department is urging retailers, food banks and surplus outlets to check their facilities for the product.
28 confirmed cases and 20 probable cases of infant botulism, a serious bacterial illness, were linked to the product.
The department says any retailer or distributor that finds the recalled ByHeart formula or other outdated infant products in its supply should immediately remove and destroy them.
The department also warns consumers about ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula. Consumers who find the recalled formula in their homes should throw it away. If it is found at a store or food bank, notify the department by emailing scdarapidalert@scda.sc.gov.
