Tracee Ellis Ross, Emmy-nominated actress and entrepreneur, wears many hats. As founder of PATTERN Beauty, a brand that celebrates natural hair textures, she sought to create a new office space in West Hollywood, which also houses her studio, Joy Mill Entertainment. The space is a translation of PATTERN’s warmth, optimism, and expressive spirit. Designed by Alyssa Lewis with Design Within Reach, in collaboration with Ross, the space blends modernist classics with bold, contemporary design while echoing the brand’s visual language.
The color and material palette served as the north star of the project, influencing everything from furniture selections to the final layout. Rich tones of ochre, toffee, and tobacco are paired with warm woods and organic marbles, guiding the design journey. The result is a sense of cohesion across zones, while still allowing each area to express its own personality.
Behind the Design of the PATTERN Beauty Workplace
Lewis explains how she and her team approached designing an environment that reflects Ross’s creative vision. “The foundation needed to reflect the brand’s ethos,” she shares. “Those early choices became the lens through which we approached every element of the space, from architectural finishes to the furniture mix, ensuring that the environment felt like a natural extension of PATTERN Beauty and Joy Mill Entertainment.”
“Tracee’s commitment to warmth results in an office that feels not just designed, but deeply lived in,” says designer Alyssa Lewis.
Rooted in richness and individuality, the workspace also features furnishings that spotlight DWR’s distinct perspective. Midcentury icons such as the Eames Soft Pad Chairs and the Eames Molded Plywood Dining Chairs are paired with contemporary statement pieces like the Luce Suspended Lamp from Flos. Designs from Louis Poulsen, HAY, Knoll, and Gubi add further layers of materiality and form. This careful curation mirrors PATTERN’s vision, mixing contemporary culture while creating a space that feels both deeply personal and timeless.
The lounge features the Ellison Studios Yoko Coffee Table, HAY Chisel Lounge Chairs, Borderline Wool Moroccan Rug from Beni Rugs, and HAY Quilton Sofas.
Ross’s perspective shaped every decision throughout the project. The artwork, drawn entirely from PATTERN Beauty’s campaigns, reinforces her instinct for storytelling and brings the brand’s history to life. Her desire for a space that feels residential, layered, and deeply personal led Lewis and DWR to blend textures, eras, and global influences in a way that remains authentic to the brand’s ethos.
“Ross sees design as a narrative,” Lewis adds. “A way to express identity, intention, and joy. Her creativity guided the emotional tone of the space, resulting in an office that feels not just designed, but deeply lived-in and expressive of who she is and what PATTERN represents.”
“Tracee’s commitment to warmth results in an office that feels not just designed, but deeply lived in,” says Lewis.
The kitchen features Hay’s Black Rey Stools and Reform Kitchens products designed in collaboration with DWR.
For focused work, ergonomic performance was essential. Herman Miller Aeron Chairs support proper alignment and comfort in all sitting positions.
