With a year-over-year spike in search of more than 2,500 percent, silk foundation squarely sits atop all the other spring makeup trends. While this new interest is likely largely driven by Armani’s newly reformulated and much-discussed Luminous Silk Foundation ($69), there are many other silk foundations out there as well to help drive the trend.
“It looks like we’ll see a shift in desired textures this spring, with a focus on silky, dewy and matte finishes that achieve a “soft-focus, polished glam look,” says Fresha beauty expert Annabelle Taurua.

So what sets a silk foundation apart, and where does it get that name from?
“A silk foundation usually refers to a formula that feels very lightweight on the skin while still creating a smooth and refined finish,” says New York professional makeup artist and hairstylist Stephanie Orsomarso. “The texture is typically a thinner liquid that glides across the skin easily, which is where the ‘silk’ comparison comes from.”
An important note: Silk foundation “isn’t really an official category,” says Orsomarso, the way matte or full coverage foundations fit into categories. “It’s more of a way people describe a certain texture and finish,” she adds.
When you use a silk foundation, you can expect “a natural-looking finish that sits somewhere between satin and radiant,” she says. “Coverage is usually light to medium and very buildable, which allows the skin to look like skin, just more even, smoother and naturally luminous.” It’s ideal for someone who’s looking for coverage but doesn’t want their makeup to feel heavy or look too matte, making it ideal for both in-person and photos. “This type of finish is one of my personal favorites to use on clients because it looks so natural in person and photographs beautifully,” Orsomarso adds.
Why Are Silk Foundations Trending?
With searches for silk foundation rising so drastically, it’s clear that makeup trends are changing, and makeup wearers are looking for a very particular look. “Right now there is a big shift toward makeup that looks more natural and skin focused,” says Orsomarso. “My clients are constantly asking for skin that looks healthy and glowing rather than heavy, full coverage matte finishes.” Silk foundation gives exactly that, yet you still enjoy a long-wearing formula. There’s no need to compromise for performance when it comes to these silk-style foundations.
These silk formulas “fit perfectly into this trend because they tend to blur and smooth the complexion without looking thick or cakey,” says Orsomarso. “Essentially you still get coverage where you need it, but the overall result feels fresh, lightweight and very natural which is exactly what people are looking for right now.”
Who Can Use a Silk Foundation?
Good news: The answer is pretty much everyone. “Silk foundations tend to work beautifully on many skin types because a lot of these formulas include hydrating ingredients or skin care elements that help the foundation sit more smoothly on the skin,” says Orsomarso. “They generally don’t emphasize texture the way some matte formulas can.”
Even if you have oilier skin, you can still wear a silk foundation as long as you properly prep the skin and use a setting powder. “I usually just recommend lightly setting the areas that tend to get shiny throughout the day so the finish stays even,” she says.
Many are wondering if silk foundation is good for mature skin, and it absolutely is. “For more mature skin, silk foundations are often one of my first choices when someone wants coverage,” says Orsomarso. She likes it for more mature skin types because the “texture tends to smooth over the skin rather than sitting heavily on top of it, which helps keep the complexion looking soft, fresh and natural,” she says. She uses it for natural-looking coverage on mature skin, so if someone prefers something more sheer, a radiant finish will be best.

“One of my personal favorites is Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation,” says Orsomarso. “The formula is very fluid and silky, and it smooths out the complexion while still feeling extremely lightweight on the skin. The coverage is buildable and the finish has a soft and natural glow that makes the skin look healthy without appearing heavy.”
