Student Government’s Campus Action Committee partnered with Yoga Joint, a South-Florida-based fitness studio chain, to host “March into Fitness,” available to all FAU Students. The event consisted of an outdoor FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type) pilates group session, led by Yoga Joint’s instructors.
Under the South Florida sun, members of the Campus Action Committee, Yoga Joint instructors, and a handful of students gathered at the housing lawn on Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton campus for a group FITT pilates session.
Yoga mats, resistance bands, and beverages awaited participants, creating a welcoming and encouraging space for students. To cap off the positive energy, the Red Bull DJ truck provided music and drinks to attendees and bystanders.
Angelina Bonis, the Campus Action Committee chair and FAU junior, helped organize the event. She says her goal for the “March into Fitness” initiative was to “encourage more movement and make fitness more accessible to students.” Not only was the event intended to promote physical fitness, but it also promoted mental health. She hopes students also see these events as an opportunity to get involved and “create a sense of community.”
Sophomore Andrew Carter said he attended because “he wanted to stretch out his muscles and get loose.” Additionally, Carter commented that he felt persuaded to attend the event “because of his friends and (fraternity) brothers.”
Toward the end of the event, Boca House Secretary Enrique Toro-Mendez shared positive feelings toward the fitness session. “It’s always a good day when you get active,” said Toro-Mendez.
Additionally, Toro-Mendez hopes the event and other similar events can bring the community together. Evidently, SG’s efforts were effective because Carter felt the event “brought him closer to the community and his brothers.”
This SG and Yoga Joint collaboration is just one of several initiatives aimed at promoting student fitness at FAU. According to Bonis, efforts include a free tennis racket rental program at FAU to encourage more students to use campus facilities, such as the courts.
Bonis emphasized, “This event is not a one-time thing as this is our second event like this already; it’s part of a larger initiative through Campus Action focused on long-term student engagement and well-being, and hopefully can become a yearly tradition at FAU.”
