Michelle Obama’s style evolution since leaving the White House has been amazing to watch, but Sasha Obama’s beauty transformation brought a whole new meaning to the “Obama” name. From pink ribbons to full glam, Sasha went from a girly-girl to an effortless icon. It’s no surprise that the youngest Obama daughter, 24 at the time of writing, has experimented with her appearance, like any other child, considering her parents prioritized normalcy inside the home. “Barack and I did everything we could to give our girls as normal a life as possible,” Michelle told Parents.
During her early days in the White House, Sasha went makeup-free. But as she got older and her name garnered more attention, she developed a more professional appearance, stepping out in braces and tightly smoothed buns. After former President Barack Obama left office in 2017, Sasha was no longer under the media’s microscope and faded from the public eye. That soon changed in 2023, when a paparazzi picture of her wearing a silver bikini top while smoking a cigarette made headlines, thrusting her back into the spotlight.
Michelle explained to Parents that Sasha is under more scrutiny than others her age. “They’ve learned to roll with the punches,” she said, adding that she can’t wait to see what her daughter surprises her with next. At 7 years old, when the Obamas attended a Democratic rally in 2008, Sasha was spotted wearing a natural shade of lip gloss with her hair styled into ringlets. Her curls were parted evenly on each side, most probably the work of a professional hair stylist, and her look was topped with diamond-look earrings.

Moving into the White House as an anxious 8-year-old turned out not to be so bad. In her early days, Sasha’s beauty routine was simple. She would regularly appear without makeup and was even spotted on the Truman Balcony with some curly, carefree flyaways, which reflected the sense of normalcy her parents encouraged at home. “We made sure they were doing things like making their beds every morning and as they got older, getting summer jobs,” Michelle explained to Parents.
Sasha’s polished bun and braces reflected a shift toward a more refined look

Sasha’s “less is more” attitude continued in 2014, when she attended the TNT Christmas in Washington event. As she entered adolescence, Sasha was often captured rocking buns and braces, and the sleek updos and focus on straight teeth hinted at a more polished approach to her appearance. Raising two daughters in the public eye helped Barack recognize the impossible beauty standards imposed on women. “When you’re a dad of two daughters, you notice more,” Barack told ballet legend Misty Copeland (via Time).
Sasha looked oh-so 2016 with her French braids and choker

Sasha was in her mid-teens when she attended her first White House state dinner in 2016. Her hair was styled into two French braids, wrapped around her head like a crown. While she opted for a more subtle makeup look on her cheeks, Sasha repped bold, winged black eyeliner, and her eyebrows were filled in. Michelle told Entertainment Tonight that it was the first time the girls had gotten to do ‘the big girl dress-up thing.’ Sasha looked very on-brand for 2016, wearing a black choker and a mesh dress.
Emerging into the world of womanhood, and her mom’s makeup bag
Although Sasha has kept a low profile since leaving the White House, she couldn’t escape the paparazzi in 2022. While hiking in Hollywood with her sister, a sneaky snap revealed Sasha’s hourglass figure, topped off with a necklace and a ponytail.
As she transitioned into womanhood, Sasha began dipping into her mom’s makeup. “I can’t find anything with these little women in my house,” Michelle joked in an episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” Sasha completed her casual vibe with a natural makeup look.
Sasha was living la vie bohème in 2023
Not only is Sasha Obama incredibly fashionable, but she’s also a sustainable queen. In 2023, Sasha was spotted rewearing her clothes and rocking a variety of hairstyles. On one occasion, she paired her flowing lilac maxi skirt with thick braids.
On another occasion, she wore a psychedelic maxi skirt with a loose braid that almost reached her waist. In true Sasha fashion, she kept her makeup to a minimum, wearing mascara and blush. Sasha reflected a new bohemian approach to her closet, donning layers of beaded necklaces and chunky rings.
Sasha became the people’s princess of Gen Z style
After her smoking scandal, Sasha was named ‘the people’s princess of Gen Z style’ by Highsnobiety. While her paisley dresses and statement accessories, part of the upcoming 2026 fashion trends you won’t be able to avoid, ultimately earned her the title, the outlet also acknowledged her love for oversized outfits and vintage handbags.
In 2025, more paparazzi pictures of Sasha went viral on Facebook. Entertainment outlet Cultura Collectiva captioned the montage, saying, “Sasha Obama is such a fashion girlie!”
