Open Farm recently announced the launch of GoodGut, its first gut-focused nutrition line powered by Lifeway Foods, a leading kefir brand and a pioneer in probiotic science.
Designed as a foundational, everyday kibble to support digestive health and whole-body wellness from puppyhood through adulthood, GoodGut reflects a broader shift in how pet parents approach nutrition. As wellness culture increasingly prioritizes prevention, functional ingredients, and long-term health, those same standards are now shaping the pet food category.
As pet parents increasingly apply human wellness standards to their pets, digestive health has moved from niche to necessity. Today, 95% of pet parents consider their pets part of the family, and more than 70% rank digestive health as a top wellness concern. Over 90% say it directly influences their purchasing decisions.
This shift mirrors a larger cultural moment. Gut health has become a central focus across food, supplement, and wellness industries, fueled by social media, functional brands, and growing interest in proactive health. On TikTok alone, #GutTok has surpassed one billion views, while searches for dog probiotics continue to rise year over year. GoodGut taps directly into this movement, bringing a gut-first approach to canine nutrition through a thoughtfully designed system that nourishes, maintains, and protects the gut microbiome.
“Gut health is no longer just a wellness trend, it’s the foundation of long-term health for both people and pets,” said Mark Sapir, Chief Marketing Officer, Open Farm. “With GoodGut, we’re bringing together veterinary science, proven probiotic expertise, and responsibly sourced ingredients to create a gut-first food that fits how modern pet parents actually live and feed.”
GoodGut was developed to deliver the kind of digestive support pet parents have come to expect from their own wellness routines, adapted specifically for dogs. Each recipe features a complete system of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics so gut health is built into the food, eliminating the need to reactively manage symptoms or stack multiple products.
Each recipe delivers supplement level probiotics with 2 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) per pound. CFUs measure the number of live, beneficial microorganisms and are a key indicator of probiotic potency and effectiveness. Most traditional kibble offerings measure CFUs in the millions. GoodGut is powered by CanineCulture, a proprietary blend of 10 probiotic strains developed in partnership with Lifeway Foods. The recipes also include prebiotic fibers that help beneficial bacteria thrive, along with postbiotic compounds that help support a healthy gut microbiome, better nutrient absorption, improved stool quality, and more consistent daily wellness.
“For years, pet parents have trusted Lifeway as part of their own wellness routines, while we’ve continued to show up for the pet community through conventions, animal welfare initiatives, and ongoing partnerships with leading pet nutrition experts like Certified Canine Nutritionist Kayla Kowalski,” said Julie Smolyansky, President and CEO, Lifeway Foods. “GoodGut is a natural extension of that long-standing relationship, created in direct response to pet parents asking for a probiotic specifically formulated for their pets, and brings our decades of cultured dairy and probiotic expertise to pet nutrition in a thoughtful, purposeful way.”
GoodGut is formulated by Dr. Moran Tal-Gavriel, BSc, DVM, DVSc, Dip. ECVCN, Open Farm’s Head of Veterinary Nutrition and one of a limited number of board-certified veterinary nutritionists in North America. Drawing on experience across clinical practice, academic research, and global product innovation, Dr. Tal-Gavriel designed GoodGut to deliver functional benefits at efficacious levels, without compromising on taste, ingredient quality, or sustainability.
“A healthy gut microbiome is central to nearly every system in the body,” said Dr. Tal-Gavriel. “With GoodGut, we focused on building a balanced, resilient microbiome foundation that supports healthy digestion and nutrient absorption. This, combined with a nutritional profile designed to strengthen immune health, cognition, and overall vitality, supports lifelong health from puppyhood through adulthood.”
GoodGut combines nutrient-dense kibble with freeze-dried raw pieces to create a highly digestible, protein-forward feeding experience that brings together targeted digestive health support, supplement-level probiotic potency, and raw-inspired taste in a single, complete and balanced meal. GoodGut is available in 3.5lb and 19lb bags in three single-protein recipes: Wild Caught Salmon made with Ocean Wise recommended salmon, Grass-Fed Beef made with Certified Humane beef, and Harvest Chicken made with Global Animal Partnership certified chicken.
GoodGut continues to deliver on all Open Farm promises, including 100% humanely raised and sustainability sourced meat and fish, traceable ingredients, and 100% non-GMO grains, fruits, and vegetables. Each recipe is formulated to offer complete and balanced nutrition according to the nutritional levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages except for growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult). As part of Open Farm’s commitment to zero waste to landfill, GoodGut is recyclable through curbside or in-store drop-off.
