A supplement company said it is recalling vitamin C allergy products that were distributed around the United States due to undeclared ingredients that could pose problems for some people with allergies.
An announcement posted on March 27 on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website said that Blueroot Health in Connecticut is recalling two lots of Vital Nutrients Aller-C dietary supplements after capsules were found to have undeclared ingredients that could be allergenic to some people. They include egg, hazelnut, and soy that were not declared on the label.
“People who have allergies and/or severe sensitivity to egg, hazelnut, and soy run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product,” the statement said.
The product was distributed by the VitalNutrients company around the United States through the VitalNutrients website and other online retailers, according to the statement.
The product is packaged in white plastic bottles containing 100 or 200 capsules each with an expiration date of “05/27” on the side, the notice said.
“The allergens were discovered as part of routine internal testing and promptly reported by the company to the FDA,” the notice said. “No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.”
Consumers are asked not to use the product and to return it to Blueroot Health for a replacement, according to the announcement.Signs of an Allergic ReactionAllergic reactions vary and can depend on the type of food consumed. Symptoms include hives, swelling, respiratory problems, or, in severe cases, anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction that requires immediate medical treatment, health officials said.
Eggs, soy, and tree nuts, including hazelnuts, are among the most common allergens listed by the FDA. The others include shellfish, sesame, peanuts, milk, fish, and wheat.
