The Belhaven Police Department is spreading holiday cheer while raising awareness about a program designed to support elderly residents and those living alone.

Department staff delivered Easter baskets this week to participants in the department’s R-U-OKAY Program, a community outreach initiative that provides daily wellness checks, according to BPD.

The program is aimed at promoting safety and independence for residents who may not have nearby family support. Participants receive a scheduled phone call each day to confirm they are safe.

BPD said that if a participant answers and indicates they are well, no further action is taken. If calls go unanswered after multiple attempts, officers follow up by contacting an emergency contact and, if necessary, conducting an in-person welfare check.

Police say the program offers peace of mind for both participants and their families, especially those who live out of town.

Residents interested in enrolling in the program are encouraged to contact the Belhaven Police Department for more information.
